James Richardson & Sons, Limited Celebrates 150th Anniversary with $1 Million Contribution to Winnipeg's Four Major Performing Arts Groups

Hartley Richardson, President & Chief Executive Officer of James Richardson & Sons, Limited announced today that the Firm will make a $1 million contribution to be shared by the four major performing arts groups in Winnipeg.

"Described by the arts community recipients as the largest single private sector operating donation ever made to the four organizations at the same time, the gift is being provided in recognition of the 150th anniversary of James Richardson & Sons, Limited," said Peter George, President of Manitoba Opera Board of Directors and spokesperson on behalf of the four arts groups.

Details of the donation were announced by Hartley Richardson at an event held at the Muriel Richardson Auditorium of the Winnipeg Art Gallery on January 10. Richardson stated that $250,000 will be donated to each organization: Manitoba Opera (Transit of Venus), Manitoba Theatre Centre (Our Town), Royal Winnipeg Ballet (Carmen: The Passion), and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (Up Close and Personal outreach program).

The Richardson Family has long supported the performing arts in Manitoba and across Canada to emphasize the value of life beyond the workplace. "Since our inception in 1857, we have recognized the importance of making investments in the community. This commitment to the major performing arts groups will result in new productions and enhanced programs," said Richardson.
