Harbourfront Concerts & Lake of the Woods Concert Group,
in conjunction with Manitoba Opera,
Opera at the Lake
Sunday, August 19, 2007

Harbourfront Concerts & Lake of the Woods Concert Group today announced that in conjunction with Manitoba Opera, they will be presenting Opera at the Lake, Sunday, August 19, 2007, beginning at 1 pm under the tent at the lake.

The hour-long concert will feature excerpts from Manitoba Opera's new opera Transit of Venus, which receives its world premiere in November, and selections from opera favourites performed by soloists with piano accompaniment. The presentation will also include door prizes, displays and a children's activity centre.

The event is free of charge. Doors open at 12:30 pm, rush seating.

Manitoba Opera is celebrating 35 seasons of opera in 2007/08. The season will kick off with the world premiere of Transit of Venus (November 24, 27, and 30), composed by Victor Davies and based on the internationally acclaimed play of the same name by Maureen Hunter. Transit of Venus explores the question of achieving your potential or being with the people you love. It is inspired by the real-life 18th century French astronomer, Le Gentil and tells the story of his passion for what he believes is his destiny (astronomy) and Celeste's unconsummated love for him.

A mid-season 35th Season Celebration Concert will be presented March 1, 2008 and one of the most frequently performed, recorded and filmed of all operas, La Traviata, a tragic love story, will close the season April 19, 22, and 25.
